Our
immaginary tour through
the beauties of Salento
starts from Lecce,
the town of Barocco,
an architectonic style
that owes its origin
to the ductility of
the local “leccese” stone.
This itinerary is characterized
by reality and fantasy,
simple tradition and
art treasures.
You must visit: The
castle of Carlo V,
the Roman amphitheatre,
the Roman Theatre,
St. Matthew church,
Piazza Duomo (see the
picture), St. Irene
church, Sts. Niccolò and
Cataldo church, the
Convent of Olivetani,
Palazzo Andretta, Palazzo
dei Celestini, Palazzo
Adorno and the Basilica
of Santa Croce, with
its astonishing baroc
façade.

Gallipoli is an important historical
centre. It is also
called The Pearl of
the Ionian sea (“La
Perla dello Ionio”).
It is an isle linked
to dry land by means
of a bridge made up
of small stone arches.
At the end of the bridge,
in the new part, there
is the Greek- Roman
Fountain (Fontana greco-
romana) and the Arena
Rivellino, that look
on the Ancient City.
In Gallipoli there
are beautiful long
and white sandy beaches
and fascinating cliffs.
You must visit: The
Cathedral, the underground
oil mills, the bastions
and the walls running
around the historical
centre, the fish market,
the Chiesa della Purità,
St. Francesco d’Assisi
church, St. Angelo
church.

Our
tour goes on to Otranto.
This noble and refined
town has been so important
since ancient times
that the provinces
of Lecce, Taranto and
Brindisi are called “Terra
d’Otranto”.
Near Otranto there
are the Alimini Lakes
(“Laghi Alimini”),
a nature itinerary
extending for more
than 400 hectares of
land. This place is
a real paradise thanks
to its long beaches
(more than 10 Km) and
its very clear blue
sea water, one of the
cleanest in Italy.
You must visit: The
Cathedral, where there
are the relics of the
Martyrs of the terrible
1840 Turkish siege;
the wonderful mosaic
flooring by brother
Pantaleone, which portrays
the Tree of Life; the
Walls; the Castle and
the beautiful historic
centre full of typical
Roman little streets.
